A large selection of monuments and historic buildings were destroyed and damaged during the war in Hanover, however much of its wealthy heritage sustained some damage.Hanover is not a typical European city. Do not expect to see beautiful centuries-old buildings; the city was one of the hardest hit during the Second World War, leaving her with only a few places of historical interest. Even the area of the Old Town (Altstadt) is "new"; all the old houses left standing after the war (about 40) were taken throughout the city and collected in one place. This area is surrounded by gray buildings of 1950 that give a somewhat heavy atmosphere to the streets. However, there are still several residential neighborhoods consisting of housing stock late 19th century frequently made historicist (Victorian) Decorations just outside the city center, as Oststadt, List or Linden. Hanover has large green areas, forests and parks. The landscape is flat, with the Leine River passing through the city. The lake Masch (Maschsee) is rather spectacular, considering its size as an object made by man. The city had a special relationship with the late French artist Niki de Saint-Phalle. I had several of his works in public places in Hannover (ie, the "Nanas", "cave" in the Great Garden) and also in the Sprengel Museum. To honor his contribution to Hanover, was granted honorary citizenship of the city government. Moreover, the newly renovated "underground" shopping arcade of the central station Kröpcke was named "The Niki de Saint-Phalle Promenade". Hannover utilities are excellent, due to major reconstruction for the World Expo 2000. The shopping area under the train station was renovated in 2005-2006, in preparation for the World Cup.
