First hybrid orchid

In 1929, the garden developed the first hybrid orchid as part of an orchid breeding program pioneered by Holttum. Since then, this unique breeding program has been instrumental in producing a variety of hybrids on strike. Later, in 1980, when the garden got a grant for remodeling, the new plan was based on a concept of three cores with three different areas, such as Bukit Timah Core, Core Tanglin and Central Core. The core now has the expansive National Orchid Garden.Spread over three acres of land on the highest hills of Singapore Botanic Gardens, National Orchid Garden is supposed to have the largest display of tropical orchids in the world, with more than orchids 60,000 1,000 2,000 orchid species and hybrids. The highlight of this garden is its distinctive design concept that organizes orchids on the basis of a system of colors to suit the four different seasons. For example, cream and yellow orchids stand for spring with pink and red orchids for summer. An amazing collection of white orchids are part of the screen winter and purple and red orchids adorn autumn section.

With about 600 species and hybrids on display, the splendor of the national flower of Singapore is a sight to behold in the National Orchid Garden. The main attraction around this section of the gardens is, of course, the National Orchid Garden and orchid farm, where more than a thousand species-two thousand hybrids can be found, forming the world's largest display of tropical orchids . The program orchid breeding has gained momentum and winning hybrids produced from then.In 1988, a grant of S $ 51 million was awarded to the Singapore Botanic Gardens Redevelopment Masterplan to transform the gardens into a botanical garden equatorial global importance in a projected span 20 years. The Master Plan was developed jointly by the National Parks Board, Public Works Department, and Jones & Jones, a consultancy American andscape design based in Seattle, Washington. The plan produced two major changes in the site of the gardens. First, the parties Napier Road and Bukit Timah were integrated, and secondly, the site is configured in a three cores: the Tanglin Core, Core Bukit Timah and Central Core. Within the core, a new and expanded orchid attraction was built next to the Valle de Ramos. The new attraction orchid was named the National Orchid Garden after an island-wide contest Attraction naming reaped many inputs and one student winner. The National Orchid Garden is a breath taking place ,one has to visit once in a lifetime. It is the only part of the Singapore Botanic Gardens which have an entry fee, but it is well worth the $5 charge. There are over 1,000 species and 2,000 hybrids, all beautifully displayed. Look out for the orchid 'Vanda Miss Joaquim', which was the first orchid hybrid bred in Singapore and was chosen as Singapore's National Flower in 1981. (There is also a separate display about this orchid elsewhere in the Botanic Gardens near the bandstand). It was first described in 1893, and is named after Miss Agnes Joaquim, in whose garden it originated. Within the garden are the VIP Orchid Garden, with hybrids named after such visiting dignitaries as Nelson Mandela and Prince William and the Celebrity Orchid Garden with hybrids named after visiting 'celebrities'. The exit to the garden is through a rather upmarket gift shop, where one can shop antique pieces. It opens at 8.30 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily. ...
