This system, which is funded entirely by the municipal government, was planned and built in just three years The red bicycles have been so well received by the public who inspired many other Chinese cities, including Beijing, to replicate the model Hangzhou. On June 16, the Beijing municipal government launched its public bicycle program. The first batch of 2,000 bicycles are parked at 63 locations with high traffic flow in Dongcheng and Chaoyang district of Beijing. Bike- convenient

Beijing is neat, in that there are bike lanes everywhere. Not just skinny lanes off to the side added as an afterthought. Actual full lanes, with a curb separating most from the general vehicle traffic. Riding a bike in Beijing is one of the best, most convenient, cheapest, healthiest and safest methods to get familiar with the city. The roads in Beijing have special tracks for bicycles and places for renting bikes are everywhere. And if you have a flat tire you will find right in the corner someone to repair it .Many hotels also rent bicycles and the price is about CNY20-30 for the whole day plus a refundable cash deposit. Just grab one bike and go, go to see the hutongs (small alleys), talk to people, eat on the streets, go and explore the wonderful city of Beijing. In Beijing traffic, there is always a choice. You can be stuck in a cab, going nowhere, because incapable drivers, trying to get ahead in busy traffic, have blocked up some intersection, leaving an entire block trapped in a huge gridlock. Alternatively, you could be peddling your way through the most narrow hutongs, the wind in your hair, swerving around any obstacles that you might come across, free as a bird. The choice is yours. I genuinely think this is the most enjoyable mode of transportation inside the center of Beijing. If you never ride a bike in your normal everyday life, just stick to the hutongs. A bicycle will give you the freedom to stop where and whenever you want and allows you to cover larger distances than on foot. Renting a bicycle for a day should cost you around 20 to 50 RMB, depending on the quality of the bike. Ask your hotel for directions to the nearest rental place. The experience is very unique and refreshing. ...
Hutong Hotel
Jan 03, 2015 at 11:29 PM
Royal Phoenix is located in the Qianliang hutong in Dongsi, North Beijing. Since it is built right in the middle of a hutong it is aptly called a hutong hotel. This hotel has come up in the year 2012, so not many people know about it in Beijing. That makes trying to get back to the hotel an interesting challenge everyday. It is on a lane in the hutong neighbourhood that is too narrow to get any large vehicle up. So ambling through the lane is the only option. This enables the tourists to have a closer look of the life of the locals and Beijing culture. The hotel lobby is large and warm. Reception counter staff is courteous, helpful and speak basic English. Everyone is friendly and the lobby area is huge and has comfortable sofas. There are about 193 rooms spread over seven floors. The rooms are large, clean and well-appointed. The beddings and sheets are clean and mattresses are soft. There is a large flat screen TV with numerous channels. There are side tables with lamps and a writing desk and chair in every room. The bath has latest fittings with rain shower head and handheld shower. Toiletries are useful. Everyday two bottles of packaged water is provided to the tourists. Wifi is available in the rooms but is very slow. Being in China, you cannot use Google or any Google apps - so beware if you're a Chromebook user. Most of the social network applications are blocked in China. However, Email, Wechat and apple FaceTime connection is good here. The breakfast buffet in the morning is huge with lots of options of Western and Chinese dishes. There are sweet rolls, many varieties of butter, fruits, juices, coffee and eggs made to order. The hutong hotel has a well stocked bar also. The bar stewards speak simple English. The drinks and cocktails are served as desired. But the best bit about the hutong hotel is definitely its location, in the middle of a poor district, where one could step out into almost an another world. A couple of hundred yards wither way out of the hotel are major roads with restaurants, cafes and shops. ...
Man in a hutong
Feb 07, 2015 at 10:21 AM
Hutongs are traditional houses of Common man in Beijing. They are representative and repository of Beijing culture. Hutong has a long history that could be dated back to the Zhou Dynasty (1027-256BC). The living quarter was divided for different people based on the social classes. For example, in the Ming Dynasty in the early 15th century, the center was the Forbidden City; aristocrats lived close to the imperial palace to the east and west while the commoners, merchants, artisans and laborers were far from the palace to its north and south. The Siheyuan residences of the nobility’s were beautifully featured and large, and the hutongs they formed were orderly and spacious in contrast to the far smaller and simpler Siheyuan and the narrower hutong alleys of the ordinary people. In the twisted lanes one can experience the life of a man in a Hutong in Beijing. These narrow lanes are home to people for generations. The first hútòngs came up during the 13th century. In the subsequent centuries, these became the principal mode of accommodation for common people. There structure and architecture have remained the same over the centuries. The bathrooms and public toilets can be found in these lanes. There are shops selling all kinds of goods that satisfy the local people’s daily needs. It is just like a community. Gossiping in these lanes is a common scene as it is the main way for people to strengthen their relationship. These lanes have witnessed the development of Beijing. Where there is such a lane, there is a story. Tourists traveling by pedicab can enjoy the general scenes and observe a man in a hutong in these lanes. Every Hutong have their own layout and structure, and when viewed from the air the combination of the lanes and courtyards resemble a chessboard with delicate gardens, fine rockeries and ancient ruins. This makes them a wonder in the world. Since there is the cross interlacement of the lanes, every house is connected to the other, making it easy for local people to keep in touch with their neighbours. Therefore, once one enters any of the lanes, one can feel the deep and warm relationships among people, which is rarely found in this modern world. Students of Chinese history, sociologists and many Westerners stay in these hútòngs for a length of time to study the man in a hutong. ...

As Beijing's traffic can be very hard, Tourist Tube suggests you to rent a bicycle, even though you must be very careful when riding it because of the chaotic and crazy car drivers and also if you are not used to cycling in heavy traffic, it can be intimidating.
