Chinese painting is one of the oldest forms of art in the world. The fascinating Chinese painting done in the traditional style is called as guóhuà in Chinese. The word guóhuà means ‘native’ painting and this is an ancient art as compared to western style of art, which came into being in the 20th century. The traditional painting is done through the same procedure as calligraphy and it is done with the help of a brush dipped in black or colored ink. This form of painting does not use any kind of oil. Like in calligraphy materials used for the traditional painting are paper and silk. The painted material on paper and silk can be mounted on scrolls to decorate as hanging scrolls or handscrolls. There are two main techniques in fascinating Chinese painting including the Gong-bi and the Ink and wash painting. The traditional costumes play a vital part in Chinese civilization. The common cross-collar and wrapping the right lapel over the left are some of the basic features of Chinese traditional costumes. Most of these features have been preserved for thousands of years now. Later, the Chinese Tunic Suit or the Mao suit as it was commonly known was created for men, while cheongsam prevailed for women in China and became a part of Chinese traditional attire. The popularity of the Mao suit was such during the early period of the People’s Republic of China that not only males but females also started wearing Mao suits during that time. In the 1970’s, with China implementing reforms and opening policies, the masses gradually turned to wearing western-style attire. Even in the present time most people in China like to wear modern clothes in their daily lives. But during festivals, religious or other occasion or any event, they do prefer to wear traditional attires only. However, many people belonging to the country’s ethnic minorities wear traditional costumes in their daily lives and these people do play an important role in the traditional Chinese clothing. In the pre-historic times, Chinese clothes were made with animal skins with decorations being done with small stones and animal teeth. The Chinese paper lanterns originated from the Eastern Han Dynasty. These lanterns were used as lamps in ancient China. It required a variety of crafts to make these lanterns including Chinese paintings, paper-cutting, and piercing and joining.
